Clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry. That’s normal.

What’s not consistent is how that moisture moves.

Trees pull water out of the ground—especially near foundations.
And they don’t do it evenly.

When a tree sits within ~20 feet of a home, its roots draw moisture from specific areas beneath the slab.

That creates imbalance:

  • One section dries out and shrinks
  • Another holds moisture and stays stable

One of the simplest ways to control this risk is a properly installed root barrier.

What it does:

  • Limits root intrusion toward the foundation
  • Helps maintain more consistent soil moisture
  • Reduces the risk of differential movement

Where it goes:

Installed between the tree and the foundation when trees are within ~20 feet.

Position matters. Placement isn’t guesswork.

What “Done Right” Actually Means

This is where mistakes happen.

A barrier only works if it’s installed correctly:

  • Minimum 36-inch trench depth
  • Minimum 36-inch barrier height
  • Rigid plastic or galvanized material
  • Installed directly between tree and foundation

Miss those details and you don’t have protection—you have exposure.

No Documentation = No Defense

If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen.

You need:

  • Wide shot showing tree, foundation, and install location
  • Verified 36" depth
  • Verified 36" height

Without that:

Warranty carriers push back
Claims get harder to defend
